CAIF/AFISSUR - Brazil
The Smile Train's Surgical Partnership with CAIF was established in November 2000, in collaboration with its parent organization, Associação de Reabilitação e Promoção Social Do Fissurado Lábio Palatal ("AFISSUR"). The Cleft Lip and Palate Assistant Center ("CAIF"), located in Curitiba, Brazil, provides rehabilitation services for children suffering from congenital facial deformities. AFISSUR was created as a social association and a philanthropic entity managed by the patients' parents. Dr. Lauro Consentino Filho, the Founder and Director of CAIF, manages the center, whose 72 medical professionals and specialists have treated more than 3,000 registered patients. The Smile Train partners with CAIF to enable them to treat more children with cleft lip and palate. To date, this Partnership has enabled 300 children to receive cleft treatment at CAIF's comprehensive cleft center. 100 more children will be treated in the next year.
