SOBRAPAR Institute for Craniofacial Plastic Surgery
The Smile Train's first Surgical Partnership in Brazil began in June 2000 with SOBRAPAR Instituto de Cirurgia Plástica Craniofacial
(SOBRAPAR) in Campinas, Sõo Paolo. SOBRAPAR provides comprehensive team care to an underprivileged population with craniofacial deformities. Through this Partnership, more than 400 children have received free cleft surgery, and 200 more children will be treated in the next year.
From 2000 until 2005 the program was lead by Dr. Cassio M. Raposo do Amaral, M.D., Founder and President of SOBRAPAR, and Full Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery at Campinas State University. Today, Dr. Vera Lucia Adami Raposo do Amaral, wife of the late Dr. Cassio Raposo do Amaral, has assumed Presidency of SOBRAPAR and management of The Smile Train Program.
Dr. Cassio Raposo do Amaral once said, "The Smile Train [brings] a new hope to Brazilian children with cleft lip and palate, by means of an effective, direct, efficient, and well-managed financial aid, [that allows] centers such as SOBRAPAR to maximize and optimize their activities."
In 2005, SOBRAPAR became the first Smile Train Partner to receive The Joseph G. McCarthy Excellence in Medicine and Humanitarian Award. SOBRAPAR received this award in recognition of having demonstrated the highest ideals and noblest values in the medical profession, and having made significant contributions to alleviate the suffering of thousands of disadvantaged children.
