Association of Patients with Facial Anomalies and their Parents
Association of Patients with Facial Anomalies and their Parents (ALA), founded in 1997 in the city of Plovdiv, is the sole association in Bulgaria for parents of children born with facial anomalies. The Smile Train formed a Surgical Partnership with ALA in order to assist poor children in Bulgaria born with cleft lip and palate. Since September 2000, The Smile Train support has allowed 170 additional poor children in Bulgaria to receive surgical care at the Medical Institute of Plovdiv under the direction of Youri Anastassov, M.D. Robert J. Demuth, M.D., Retired Professor of Plastic Surgery, OHSU, serves as mentor for the Program. ALA is currently working with The Smile Train to provide help for an additional 100 children.
