National Pediatric Hospital
National Pediatric Hospital became a Smile Train Partner in 2003. Dr. Long Vanna, Director of The Smile Train Program, has been with NPH since the Pediatric Surgical Department opened in 1998.
More than 1/3 of Cambodia's population lives below the poverty line. Sources estimate that every year more than 720 babies are born with cleft lip and/or palate. National Pediatric was The Smile Train's first Partner in Cambodia. Since the Partnership began, National Pediatric has provided surgery for more than 200 cleft lip and palate surgeries for poor children. Through this partnership, 120 more children will receive free cleft surgery next year alone.
Dr Long Vanna says "I can notice that the poor cleft children who were hopelessly struggling in their life are now becoming the strong and the self-confident. They join in on the social work contribute to the development of their own family as well as the nation."
In November, 2004, The Smile Train funded an Education and Training Grant, which supported the "First Symposium on Surgical Techniques in Cleft Lip and Palate" at NPH. 80 plastic surgeons from around Cambodia attended this symposium, the goal of which was to discuss cleft surgery techniques and to share experience in cleft care practice with other cleft care providers. The Smile Train also supported the Second Symposium on Surgical Techniques in Cleft Lip &Palate &Concept of Multidisciplinary Team Care of Cleft Patients held in December, 2005, further exemplifying their commitment to cleft training in Cambodia.
