Fundación Gantz
The Smile Train's first Surgical Partnership in Chile began with Fundación Gantz on December 2000 under the leadership of its President, Luis Monasterio Aljaro, M.D. Established in 1978, Fundación Gantz is a non-profit institution, headquartered in Santiago, which performs 350 cleft lip and palate interventions a year. With The Smile Train's support, the cleft lip and palate team at Fundación Gantz has provided cleft surgical care to 350 additional indigent children. Through The Smile Train's continued Partnership with Fundación Gantz, 300 additional children will receive cleft lip and palate surgery in 2006.
Fundación Gantz is also involved in educating cleft care providers. In August 2001, The Smile Train helped sponsor a Speech Symposium: "Tendencias en la Terapia Fonoaudiologica del Niño Fisurado" held at Fundación Gantz. Over a hundred medical professionals and graduate students attended this Symposium in Santiago, including speech pathologists, pediatric surgeons, and otolaryngologists. The Smile Train also provided Fundación Gantz with an Education & Training Grant to help sponsor a Cleft Lip and Palate Symposium held on November 14th and 15th of 2003. 80 medical professionals attended the event and were educated on the new developments in pediatric care for children with cleft lip and palate.
