The Smile Train funded a Speech Training Course in Beijing, Oct. 7 - Nov. 4, 1999 for thirty oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ENT surgeons, and nurses from ten provinces in China, all of whom were interested in speech problems associated with cleft palate. The month-long course provided concepts in speech and language disorders, especially in the area of cleft palate speech, and enabled participants to diagnose speech defects and guide language treatment.
Scholarships funded by a Smile Train Education and Training Grant allowed dedicated
physicians from this important center for cleft treatment to meet
and learn from colleagues all over the world at the Cleft Congress
2000 in Switzerland.
