The Smile Train funded an Education and Training Grant through the
Speech Department at the University of Hong Kong. Paul Fletcher,
Ph.D. and Tara L. Whitehill, Ph.D. led the department, in association
with Linda D'Antonio, Ph.D., of Loma Linda University. The grant
benefited two research projects: the first, spearheaded by Dr. Jinfeng
Li of the Stomatological College and Hospital at Xi'an Jiaotong
University, focuses on early surgical treatment and home intervention
for correcting speech problems in children with cleft palate; the
second, led by Dr. Feng Yunzhi of The Second Xiangya Hospital at
Central South University, aims to develop and test the efficacy
of training materials for family members to treat articulation errors
in children with cleft palate.
