Armonizar
Armonizar is a non-profit organization founded in Peru in 1997, dedicated to fostering physical, psychological, and spiritual harmony in children with cleft lip and palate. Armonizar is made up of professionals in different specialties, seeking to provide comprehensive cleft rehabilitation to children of very limited economic resources. They also offer children’s families the information and support that they need. Armonizar is currently working in three cities in Peru (Lima, Trujillo, and Chincha) as well as one city in Colombia (Medellin). The Smile Train provides Armonizar with Treatment Grants that support post-operative care in the form of speech therapy sessions for children who have previously received cleft lip and palate surgery from Cirplast, a Smile Train Partner. The speech therapy sessions are supervised by Dr. German Alvarado and Dr. Jose Sapaico.

Asociacion Operaciòn Sonrisa / Tolima
In the country of Colombia, children born with cleft lip or palate
receive little or no financial assistance. For about 7 years, the
Asociacion Operaciòn Sonrisa has been providing free cleft care
for children under the age of 14 who live in impoverished conditions.
The Smile Train has approved a Treatment Grant for Asociacion Operaciòn
Sonrisa in Tolima. The program, organized by Ms. Lola Cruz de Mendoza,
will provide further treatment for indigent children in the region
of Tolima. Clara Ines Zafra Dulcey, M.D., and Cesar Augusto Candia
Arana, M.D., led a comprehensive team of surgeons and anesthesiologists,
respectively.

Fundación Proban
Fundacion Proban is located in the region of Uraba in Antioquia, Columbia. This is one of the poorest regions of the country with more than 60% of the population living under impoverished conditions. Children born with cleft lip and palate are frequent, and their access to healthcare is very limited. Fundacion Proban has adopted the mission of providing quality cleft care to those who cannot afford it. With the help of a Smile Train Treatment Grant, 20 underprivileged children will receive the cleft lip and palate treatment they need. This project will be overseen by Angela Maria Lema Ortega.

Fundación Sonrisa Manizales
Fundación Sonrisa (Smile Foundation) is a cleft lip and palate clinic that was established 20 years ago by Colombia Quintero, M.D. The doctors and medical support staff devote their time on a voluntary basis to treat children with cleft lip, palate and other craniofacial malformations. Approximately 300 patients per year receive treatment and with a Treatment Grant from The Smile Train, Dr. Quintero and her staff will be able to treat additional children and purchase much-needed equipment.
Healing the Children – Florida Chapter
Healing the Children is an independent NGO dedicated to providing treatment and education in cardiac, orthopedic, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. The Smile Train provided a Mission Group Grant to the Florida chapter of Healing the Children in September 2006 to treat patients and educate local cleft surgeons in Apiay, Meta, Colombia. The mission team plans to treat over 150 cleft patients and train local plastic surgeons who have expressed an interest in continuing care in Apiay. The mission team leader, Dr. Laura Sudarsky, has experience in over 25 medical missions abroad.

Hospital de Kennedy/Fundacion Sonrie
Located in the city of Pereira, Fundacion Sonrie operates in the center of Colombia’s coffee plantations. Fundacion Sonrie is a non-profit dedicated to the education, treatment and support of cleft patients and their families. This grant will be used to provide surgical care for indigent children with cleft lip and palate in Colombia and to improve the quality of care being provided. Dr. Juan Pablo Gomez will be overseeing the project.
