The Smile Train grant, awarded in August 2006, will enable Dr. Budiharja to complete 4 weeks of intensive surgical training with a prominent Smile Train partner. With this training, Dr. Budiharja will be well-prepared to teach local doctors and perform high quality surgical care for future cleft patients in Indonesia.

The Smile Train's Partnership with The Institute of Craniofacial Studies began in 2000 under the leadership of Professor David David. Established in 1973, ICS encourages and supports the development and provision of patient diagnostic and treatment services that are appropriate and accessible worldwide to people suffering from craniofacial deformities and injuries. With The Smile Train's support and continued Partnership, ICS has provided free cleft surgery for more than 800 children in Surabaya, Malang, Makassar, Manado, and Bali, Indonesia
The Smile Train supported the training of multi-disciplinary cleft teams in Indonesia through The Institute of Craniofacial Studies. Through this training program, multidisciplinary cleft teams were established and served as specialist teams within the Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery Departments of six different hospitals throughout Indonesia. Under The Smile Train Cleft Training Program, each team received intensive training in the latest techniques by leaders from Australia and Indonesia. The initiative is supported by Indonesia's Ministry of Health.
The goal of the program is to achieve a significant volume of safe, high quality, cleft operations in Indonesia by local surgeons and cleft teams. The first training program was attended by 49 staff members in a 3-day training program in Surabaya. Cleft repair teams participated in lectures, clinical role-playing, multidisciplinary clinics, clefts operations, and other courses. In Indonesia, there are now multi-disciplinary cleft teams operating in six locations including Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, and Bandung.
The Smile Train has provided an Education and Training Grant to the Australian Craniofacial Institute to support on-going training for medical professionals, including speech pathologists, surgeons, orthodontists, nurses and anesthesiologists at Smile Train partner hospitals in Indonesia. 50 medical professionals will be well trained and educated in cleft lip and palate treatment.

John Fawcett Foundation for Humanitarian Projects in Indonesia
In order to treat poor Balinese children with clefts, the John Fawcett Foundation established a surgical cleft center in Denpasar, the capital city of Bali. Since the program's inception in 1989, more than 1,200 cleft surgeries have been performed. With funding from The Smile Train, almost 40 additional Balinese children with clefts have been treated since 2002, with oversight from Dr. Timothy Michael Cooper and Dr. Anak Agung Ngurah Jaya Kesuma.

Obor Berkat Indonesia is an independent NGO facilitating primary healthcare, dental care, and various surgical treatments for poor patients throughout Indonesia. The Smile Train provided a Treatment Grant in 2006 to support treatment of 40 patients in their cleft lip and palate program which provides an average of 185 free cleft surgeries per year. While their main hospital is in Jakarta, OBI surveys villages and coordinates trips (often bringing their own equipment) to hospitals around the country to treat patients for free in outlying areas.

Yayasan Pembina Penderita Celah Bibir Dan Langit Langit (YPPCBL)
In the city of Bandung, The Smile Train has formed a Partnership with Yayasan Pembina Penderita Celah Bibir Dan Langit (YPPCBL) / The Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation, Bandung. YPPCBL provides free cleft lip and palate surgery to children of economically deprived families in the state of West Java. To date, they have operated on over 5200 patients afflicted with clefts. Through this Partnership with The Smile Train and under the leadership of Dr. Ida Ayu Astuti, YPPCBL has provided free cleft surgery for more than 230 children. Next year, YPPCBL will provide more than 100 additional cleft surgeries to local Indonesian children.
