In Iran, hundreds of poor children with cleft are turned away from hospitals that are overloaded with patients every year. Most of these children come from rural areas where there are a lack of hospitals and surgeons, and financial aid is low or not existent. To help better this situation, The Smile Train has approved an Education &Training Grant to train 5 plastic surgeons in different rural areas of Iran, who will then be able to provide quality cleft care for the indigent children of these areas year around. Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh will be leading this project.
