Formerly known as the Kingdom of a Thousand Elephants, Lao Peoples
Democratic Republic (Laos) is a small mountainous country in South
East Asia with scarce health care resources. 82 out of 1,000 Laotian
babies die before their 5th birthday. Most of the health problems
are linked to diseases that could be treated by primary or preventive
health care. The Smile Train is funding three grants to the Laos
Cleft Lip and Palate Team through Handicap International. In addition
to receiving an Equipment Grant and an Education &Training Grant,
they received a Treatment Grant to augment cleft care to an additional
200 poor Laotian children. The Team consists of two surgeons, Dr.
Mouy and Dr. Keurtmy, anesthesiologist Dr. Vanpheng, and Mrs. Maniphet,
the nurse. Dr. Harold McComb of Handicap International will oversee
the program.
