Institute of Craniofacial Studies/Australian Craniofacial Foundation
The Smile Train supported the training of multi-disciplinary cleft teams in Malaysia through the Institute of Craniofacial Studies. Through the training program, multidisciplinary cleft teams were established and served as specialist teams within the Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery Departments in different hospitals throughout Malaysia. Each team received an intensive training under The Smile Train Cleft Training Program in the latest techniques by leaders from Australia and Malaysia. The initiative is supported by Malaysia's Ministry of Health.
The goal of the program was to achieve a significant volume of safe, high quality, cleft operations in Malaysia by local surgeons and cleft teams. The first training program in Malaysia was attended by more than 60 staff members for 5 days at the Penang Hospital. Clefts repair teams participated in lectures, clinical role-playing, multidisciplinary clinics, clefts operations, and other courses. Participants came from five regional hospitals in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Koto Bahru, Pantai, and Johor Bahru.

Pantai Medical Centre
Approximately 1,000 children are born with cleft lip and/or palate in Malaysia every year. There are not enough plastic surgeons accessible to the public, and many parents of children with a cleft do not have the finances for treatment. The Pantai Medical Centre, a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, has been treating children with clefts for the past 7 years through its cleft care program. With the help of a Smile Train Treatment Grant, Pantai Medical Centre will be able to provide 20 underprivileged children with cleft care. Drs. Tan Kim Kong and A. Damodaran will oversee this program.
