Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) is a 300 bed capacity teaching hospital located in Kano city in the North West Zone on Nigeria. It is a major referral center servicing more that 25 million people. AKTH has been providing cleft care for the past 6 years with the establishment of the Dental and Maxillofacial department. Most of the patients cannot afford the cost of surgery, and in the past only a very small number could receive the surgery. The cleft team consists of a maxillofacial surgeon, ENT surgeons, pediatricians, a pediatric surgeon, and nurses. With the help of a grant from the Smile Train, they will be able to provide surgery for 25 children who could not otherwise afford it.
The cleft team at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is also involved in the NIGERIANCRAN CLP STUDY, an international multi-center study into the causes and prevention of cleft lip and palate.

Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital
The Smile Train funded a Treatment Grant to Ebonyi State University in Enugu in 2002 and again in 2006. The program, now led by Dr. Anthonia O. Uduezue, supports cleft surgeries for poor children in Nigeria. Maternal care and delivery is free at this hospital, so doctors identify cleft children here and educate mothers on when to come back for cleft repairs. In the past, many haven't come back because this treatment wasn't free, but as word spreads of the free treatment available through Smile Train funding, we are hoping this will change.
