Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital
Approximately 600 children in Romania are born with a cleft each
year. Financial aid for cleft lip and palate care is greatly needed
due to low family income, the high child abandonment rate, and the
lack of team oriented cleft centers. Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital
has been involved with the treatment of cleft care for 4 years,
and their cleft care program is committed to providing free cleft
operations funded by various sponsors. The Smile Train approved
of an Education & Training Grant to Grigore Andrescu Hospital
to enable Dr. Jan Lilja and members of the cleft team from Göteborg,
Sweden to hold training sessions for the cleft team. The training
sessions will consist of surgical workshops on different types of
clefts, discussions on principles and techniques, and seminars lead
by dental and speech professionals.
