Regional Children’s Hospital
Regional Children’s Hospital, a non-profit organization in Vladimir, Russia, was established to provide free cleft lip and palate medical treatment for impoverished children. There are a large number of untreated clefts in Russia due to poor economic conditions and a lack of plastic surgeons available to the underprivileged. The Smile Train is partnering with Regional Children’s Hospital to enable them to provide more indigent children with free cleft lip and palate care. Ms. Andrei Ostanin will be overseeing this project.

Russian Children’s Welfare Society/Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute
The Smile Train established its first surgical partnership in Russia with the Russian Children’s Welfare Society (RCWS) and the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute (MMSI). This collaboration is in direct response to the needs of Russian children with cleft lip and palate who are unable to receive corrective surgery due to a lack of government funding and the economic situation in Russia. MMSI, the foremost hospital for facial reconstructive surgery for Russian children, has the most prominent and competent surgeons, but are limited in the amount of work they can do because of a lack of funding, equipment, supplies, and medications. The project began in October 2000 and is growing steadily through the initiative of lead surgeons, Dr. Svetlana V. Diakova, who is the Head of the Department of Pediatric Facial Surgery at MMSI, and Dr. Marina A. Pershina. The Smile Train has supported more than 200 cleft surgeries for indigent children and will support 200 more this year.
The Smile Train provided the RCWS with an Education and Training Grant in 2002 that funded the first ever Training Symposium on Cleft Lip and Palate in Moscow. The Symposium was led by Professor Svetlana Diakova, Head of the Department of Pediatric Facial Surgery at the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute. 250 Russian Doctors received training in current diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation procedures for cleft lip and palate. The Smile Train continued their support by funding the 2nd Training Symposium on Cleft Lip and Palate, which was held at Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute on April 19-21, 2006. This time, 500 medical professionals from 39 regions of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Sweden, Italy, and Israel received training!
