African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF)
The majority of the African population lives in rural areas with virtually no access to basic health care. An Education & Training Grant from The Smile Train will support a cleft surgery workshop for doctors based in rural East Africa. Supervised by Dr. Marlene E. Long, the workshop is designed to enhance surgical skills in cleft techniques.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (CoRSU) formerly Interface Uganda
In January 2002, The Smile Train funded two grants to CoRSU: one for Education and Training, the other for Treatment. Dr. Andrew Hodges, MBChB, FRCS, and Brian Sommerlad, FRCS, are heading both grants. Through the Education and Training Grant, Dr. Sommerlad and Dr. Hodges will train Ugandan doctors-Dr. Kinghi and Dr. Alenyo-at the Mulago Teaching Hospital in Mulago. The second grant, the Treatment Grant, funded both cleft surgeries for afflicted Ugandan children, and the purchase of vital equipment which Ugandan facilities were lacking. To date, more than 180 children have received free cleft treatment through The Smile Train - CoRSU Partnership.
