American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association / Cleft
Palate Foundation
The Smile Train's website contains a library, making it possible
for more people to have easy access to information about cleft lip
and palate. As a Smile Train partner, The American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial
Association (ACPA) has made cleft articles of its publication, The
Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal (CPCJ), accessible on the Smile
Train website. Through this, the CPCJ not only widened its readership
to a more general public, but also provided cleft lip and palate
information that can be used to improve cleft care worldwide.
Through three years of a partnership with ACPA, The Smile Train
funded all expenses associated with CLEFT-LINE, a toll-free, support,
and referral line for families of children born with clefts (800-24-CLEFT).
Over 5,000 families were supported by this funding through calls
made each year to CLEFT-LINE from all over the United States and
Canada. Also in conjunction with ACPA, The Smile Train funded the
Bears for Kids program for cleft teams throughout the United States
to distribute "cleft bears" to children with clefts for
psychological support. Furthermore, The Smile Train funded one Smile
Train Research Grant per year that supported existing and future
cleft research endeavors.

American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) Cleft Training Program
The American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) has optimized care for those affected by craniofacial anomalies for 60 years. ACPA tackles the various needs of their patients through education, research, and utilizing team care. The Smile Train-ACPA Cleft Training Program is a collaborative training program in which cleft teams formed by the ACPA will visit designated Smile Train partner hospitals in China. As an ongoing program, these teams will work with local doctors in their specialty areas of cleft lip and palate care to improve safety standards and introduce team care.
