Stanford University
The Smile Train has sponsored the Anti-Scarring Project, a research
initiative through Stanford University that supported two Chinese
plastic surgeon scientists-Dr. Wang Zhen and Dr. Xia Wei-from Xian,
China, to work at a research laboratory headed by Michael Longaker,
M.D., FACS. Together, the three doctors' work investigated mechanisms
of both cleft palate development as well as normal palate development.
They explored the mechanisms of scarring that are involved in wound
repair. The results of scar formation severely impacts the results
of every cleft lip and palate operation performed worldwide, and
by understanding the mechanisms that control cleft development and
scar formation, therapeutic strategies to decrease or eliminate
scar formation altogether may develop.
