University of North Carolina
A unique collaboration between The Smile Train and the University
of North Carolina’s School of Dentistry (UNC) was developed to sponsor
a fellowship program at the UNC Craniofacial Center. This Center
is internationally recognized as a center of excellence in the evaluation
and treatment of patients with cleft and craniofacial disorders.
Dr. Sunjay Suri, an orthodontist from Chandigarh, India, was given
the opportunity in 1999-2000 to receive further training in cleft
lip and palate treatment, with an emphasis on the team approach.
The desire was for Dr. Suri to incorporate the skills and techniques
learned at the UNC Craniofacial Center upon returning to India.
