The Smile Train provided support, along with the University of Pittsburgh’s
Cleft Palate Craniofacial Center (CPCC), for The Smile Train Visiting
Research Fellowship, which funds a visiting medical professional
to receive further training relating to cleft lip and palate research.
In collaboration with Dr. Thomas Hart and Mary Marazita, Ph.D. (Director
of CPCC), Dr. Hongping Zhu, a physician from the Cleft Palate Center,
School of Stomatology at Beijing Medical University spent one year
at CPCC to participate in genetic mapping studies of cleft lip and
palate in families from the patient population at the Beijing Cleft
Palate Center. All publications and research resulting from this
collaboration will be available to The Smile Train and its partners.
