The Smile Train made an important impact at Cleft Congress 2001, held in Göteborg, Sweden from June 25 to 29 and attended by over 1000 medical professionals.
Every four years since 1969, The Cleft Congress has brought together multidisciplinary specialists from all over the world plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, dental specialists, speech pathologists, geneticists and psychologists to improve treatment protocols, present research, and promote a better multidisciplinary understanding of cleft palate and related craniofacial anomalies.
This year, thanks to several scholarships jointly sponsored by The Cleft Congress and The Smile Train, doctors involved in cleft treatment from Ecuador, Indonesia, India, Kenya, Chile, Russia, Estonia, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, Bulgaria, Brazil, Romania, Thailand, China and The Philippines were able to attend. The scholarships gave these doctors from developing countries a unique opportunity to meet with experts in the field, learn the latest surgical techniques and treatment protocols, and hear about state-of-the-art research.
The Smile Train booth offered hundreds of interested professionals a hands-on look at two of its high-tech educational initiatives: The Virtual Surgery Project and The Smile Train Express.
200 Partners and friends of The Smile Train representing 28 Smile Train programs all over the world were present. In recognition of their crucial role in achieving The Smile Train's goals, the Partners were warmly celebrated with a reception open to all Congress attendees and a special dinner at the restaurant Kajskjul 8.
